Learn To Read With Phonics: Heart Words, Blends, and Our Complete Phonics Bundle

Learning to read is one of the most pivotal milestones in a child’s life. As parents and educators, fostering a love of reading early on sets the stage for lifelong learning! I do have to say that I wrote this blog post to help you with some tips to foster a productive, and engaging reading environment. But I also wrote it to share with you an impressive resource I made too. Typically I don’t like “salesy” blog posts but I do believe the resource I made will help you a lot, and that is why I am sharing it here in great detail. Anyway, let’s get into it…

If you’re looking for a way to teach phonics, heart words, and blends in an engaging, systematic manner, our Complete Phonics Learn-to-Read Bundle is here to make that process simple and fun. This bundle is designed for children aged 4-8 but can be adapted for any early reader, and it’s filled with proven strategies to help your child develop a love for reading.

But what is Phonics? Phonics is the process of connecting the sounds of spoken English with individual letters or letter combinations. For instance, the sound /k/ can be represented by “c,” “k,” “ck,” or “ch.” By teaching children to blend these sounds together, they can decode unfamiliar words by breaking them down and sounding them out. Phonics is widely regarded as one of the most effective methods for teaching reading because it equips children with the tools to decode words by understanding the relationship between letters and sounds, for most children (including neurodiverse children) phonics is the best approach to learning to read.

Our Complete Phonics Learn-to-Read Bundle focuses on this vital skill, progressing from beginning simple sounds to more complex sounds, blends, and digraphs, ensuring your child has a solid foundation in reading.

Encouraging a child to love reading isn’t just about teaching the mechanics; it’s about creating an environment where reading feels exciting, rewarding, and accessible. Focusing on a ‘love of reading’ approach is key. This includes reading to your child—using silly, fun voices—and making time to connect with them as you read together. Reading is about building a connection, just as much as it is about developing a skill.

How to Foster a Love of Reading. Research-Based Tips:

1. Read Aloud Often
Studies show that reading aloud to children exposes them to rich vocabulary, new ideas, and the rhythm of language, all while creating positive reading experiences. It’s advised to pair your phonics lessons with some connected storytime, to show your child how phonics translates into real-world reading.

2. Celebrate Small (and all) Wins
Positive reinforcement is so important when helping to keep children motivated. Every time your child masters a new sound or reads a word or sentence, make sure to celebrate their progress. Sometimes this can feel a little “over the top” but it’s important to keep your child inspired and motivated. This will also help your child’s confidence and attitude towards learning.

3. Make Reading Interactive and Hands-On
Research has shown that interactive and hands-on learning experiences can considerably boost a child’s engagement. And Engagement is a prerequisite for learning. Use things like flashcards, hands-on activities, and games (like those included in our bundle) to make learning to read a playful, fun experience rather than a chore. We already know that learning through play (and playful experiences) is one of the most effective ways for children to develop new skills and concepts.

4. Let Them Choose What Books to Read
Allowing children to choose what they read helps them have a sense of ownership and independence in their learning. Once your child starts decoding words using phonics, give them age-appropriate books to explore, based on their interests. This can help boost their motivation to read for pleasure!

5. Model a Love for Reading
Children often copy their parents, so if they see you reading and enjoying it, they are more likely to want to do the same. Set aside time for family reading, I suggest a nighttime reading session (as this is what I do) and make sure to take your time with it, connect on your child’s level and make sure it’s fun. let your child see that books can be a source of joy and learning for everyone.

If you have a child who seems ready to start reading but you’re unsure where to begin, our Phonics Learn-to-Read Bundle is the perfect solution! It’s also great for children who have already had some instruction and could benefit from review or additional phonics practice.
